When I reach 48th Street, the mass of tall buildings cease, and the sky opens up. At 48th Street starts an area called "United Nations Plaza," which stretches from 48th to 42nd Streets. The U.N. owns the land on the east side of the avenue.

The statue in the center background of this picture is "St. George Slaying the Dragon" -- signifying good vs. evil. It was gift to the U.N. from Yugoslavia. Here's a closer look:
